Birds play a crucial role in ecosystems, engaging in key functions such as pollination, pest control, and seed dispersal. The anatomical understanding of these species is essential to addressing emerging challenges, including climate change and habitat loss, which directly impact their survival. Detailed knowledge of avian anatomy is fundamental for research across various disciplines, ranging from ornithology to veterinary medicine. Therefore, this study aims to disseminate the understanding of avian anatomy and the application of computed tomography (CT) for visualizing the coelomic cavity in Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis). Recent advances in comprehending the anatomical structures of this region in avian species are highlighted, with a specific focus on Cory's Shearwater as a study model. Various anatomical cross-sections and transverse CT images were described and analyzed in detail, offering a comprehensive insight into the coelomic cavity from different perspectives. The correlation between anatomical cross-sections and CT images is emphasized as crucial for a profound understanding of avian anatomy. This research contributes to the broader knowledge of avian anatomy, with potential implications for conservation efforts and veterinary practices.

Raphanus sativus L. cv. Sango, commonly known as red radish, is widely consumed around the world as a vegetable, but its benefit in pain relief is not sufficiently investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of R. sativus and a possible mechanism of action. An aqueous extract of R. sativus sprouts (AERSS) was investigated by parenteral (10, 30, and 100 mg kg-1, i.p.) and enteral (500 mg kg-1, p.o.) administration in the neurogenic and inflammatory phases of the formalin test, where gastric damage was also evaluated as a possible adverse effect. Ketorolac (5 mg kg-1, i.p.) was used as the reference drug. Endogenous opioid and 5-HT1A serotonin receptors, as well as the cAMP/NO-cGMP pathways, were explored in the study of a possible mechanism of action by using their corresponding antagonists: naloxone, 1 mg kg-1, i.p., WAY100635, 1 mg kg-1, i.p., and enzymatic activators or inhibitors, respectively. Sulforaphane (SFN), a known bioactive metabolite, was analyzed using electroencephalography (EEG) to evidence its central involvement. A significant and dose-dependent antinociceptive activity was observed with the AERSS resembling the antinociceptive effect of the reference drug, with an equivalent significant response with a dose of 500 mg kg-1, p.o. without causing gastric damage. The participation of the endogenous opioid and 5-HT1A serotonin receptors at central and peripheral levels was also observed, with a differential participation of cAMP/NO-cGMP. SFN as one metabolite produced significant changes in the EEG analysis, reinforcing its effects on the CNS. Our preclinical evidence supports the benefits of consuming Raphanus sativus cv. Sango sprouts for pain relief.

Soil salinity is one of the most important factors reducing agricultural productivity worldwide. Halophilic plant growth-promoting bacteria (H-PGPB) represent an alternative method of alleviating saline stress in crops of agricultural interest. In this study, the following halophilic bacteria were evaluated: Bacillus sp. SVHM1.1, Halomonas sp. SVCN6, Halomonas sp. SVHM8, and a consortium. They were grown under greenhouse conditions in Solanum lycopersicum at different salinity concentrations in irrigation water (0, 20, 60, and 100 mM NaCl) to determine the effects on germination, fruit quality, yield, and concentration of osmoprotectors in plant tissue. Our results demonstrate the influence of halophilic bacteria with the capacity to promote plant growth on the germination and development of Solanum lycopersicum at higher salinity levels. The germination percentage was improved at the highest concentration by the inoculated treatments (from 37 to 47%), as were the length of the radicle (30% at 20 mM) and plumule of the germinated seed, this bacterium also increased the weight of the plumule (97% at 100 mM). They also improved the yield. The dry weight of the plant, in addition to having an influence on the quality of the fruit and the concentration of osmoprotectors (Bacillus sp. SVHM 1.1) had the greatest effect on fruit yield (1.5 kg/plant at 20 mM), by the otherhand, Halomonas sp. SVHM8 provided the best fruit quality characteristics at 100 mM. According to the above results, the efficiency of halophilic PGPB in the attenuation of salt stress in Solanum lycopersicum has been proven.

Organoids are three-dimensional cellular structures designed to recreate the biological characteristics of the body's native tissues and organs in vitro. There has been a recent surge in studies utilizing organoids due to their distinct advantages over traditional two-dimensional in vitro approaches. However, there is no consensus on how to define organoids. This literature review aims to clarify the concept of organoids and address the four fundamental questions pertaining to organoid models: (i) What constitutes organoids?-The cellular material. (ii) Where do organoids grow?-The extracellular scaffold. (iii) How are organoids maintained in vitro?-Via the culture media. (iv) Why are organoids suitable in vitro models?-They represent reproducible, stable, and scalable models for biological applications. Finally, this review provides an update on the organoid models employed within the female reproductive tract, underscoring their relevance in both basic biology and clinical applications.

TRAF1/C5 was among the first loci shown to confer risk for inflammatory arthritis in the absence of an associated coding variant, but its genetic mechanism remains undefined. Using Immunochip data from 3,939 patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and 14,412 control individuals, we identified 132 plausible common non-coding variants, reduced serially by single-nucleotide polymorphism sequencing (SNP-seq), electrophoretic mobility shift, and luciferase studies to the single variant rs7034653 in the third intron of TRAF1. Genetically manipulated experimental cells and primary monocytes from genotyped donors establish that the risk G allele reduces binding of Fos-related antigen 2 (FRA2), encoded by FOSL2, resulting in reduced TRAF1 expression and enhanced tumor necrosis factor (TNF) production. Conditioning on this JIA variant eliminated attributable risk for rheumatoid arthritis, implicating a mechanism shared across the arthritis spectrum. These findings reveal that rs7034653, FRA2, and TRAF1 mediate a pathway through which a non-coding functional variant drives risk of inflammatory arthritis in children and adults.

The Atlantic puffin is a medium-sized seabird with black and white plumage and orange feet. It is distributed mainly along the northern Atlantic Ocean, and due, among other reasons, to human activities, it is in a threatened situation and classified as a vulnerable species according to the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In this study, we used a total of 20 carcasses of juvenile Atlantic puffins to perform MRI, as well as anatomical cross-sections. Thus, an adequate description of the head was made, providing valuable information that could be helpful as a diagnostic tool for veterinary clinicians, who increasingly treat these birds in zoos, rehabilitation centers, and even in the wild.

The endometrium plays a vital role in fertility, providing a receptive environment for embryo implantation and development. Understanding the endometrial physiology is essential for developing new strategies to improve reproductive healthcare. Human endometrial organoids (hEOs) are emerging as powerful models for translational research and personalized medicine. However, most hEOs are cultured in a 3D microenvironment that significantly differs from the human endometrium, limiting their applicability in bioengineering. This study presents a hybrid endometrial-derived hydrogel that combines the rigidity of PuraMatrix (PM) with the natural scaffold components and interactions of a porcine decellularized endometrial extracellular matrix (EndoECM) hydrogel. This hydrogel provides outstanding support for hEO culture, enhances hEO differentiation efficiency due to its biochemical similarity with the native tissue, exhibits superior in vivo stability, and demonstrates xenogeneic biocompatibility in mice over a 2-week period. Taken together, these attributes position this hybrid endometrial-derived hydrogel as a promising biomaterial for regenerative treatments in reproductive medicine.

In birds, unlike mammals, there is no complete separation between the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Instead, they have the coelomic cavity where most main organs are found. Therefore, an adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the coelomic cavity is of great importance for veterinarians, biologists and the scientific community. This study aimed to evaluate the coelomic cavity anatomy in the Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) using anatomical sections and computed tomography images.

Imaging diagnosis plays a fundamental role in avian medicine. However, there are few publications regarding its use in ophthalmology. Seabirds, in particular, present a peculiar ecology since their lives take place in very diverse environments: the aquatic, the terrestrial, and the aerial. This fact implies a series of adaptations at a visual level that are necessary for adequate interaction with the environment. Therefore, knowledge of eye particularities is of great importance for the scientific community since it allows us to deepen our understanding of the ocular anatomy and biology of these animals, which are increasingly present in veterinary and wildlife centers. In our study, we performed a morphometric analysis of the ocular bulb and its internal structures in the puffin (Fratercula arctica) using advanced imaging techniques such as CT.

Pneumatic actuators are widely studied in soft robotics as they are facile, low cost, scalable, and robust and exhibit compliance similar to many systems found in nature. The challenge is to harness high energy density chemical and biochemical reactions that can generate sufficient pneumatic pressure to actuate soft systems in a controlled and ecologically compatible manner. This investigation evaluates the potential of chemical reactions as both positive and negative pressure sources for use in soft robotic pneumatic actuators. Considering the pneumatic actuation demands, the chemical mechanisms of the pressure sources, and the safety of the system, several gas evolution/consumption reactions are evaluated and compared. Furthermore, the novel coupling of both gas evolution and gas consumption reactions is discussed and evaluated for the design of oscillating systems, driven by the complementary evolution and consumption of carbon dioxide. Control over the speed of gas generation and consumption is achieved by adjusting the initial ratios of feed materials. Coupling the appropriate reactions with pneumatic soft-matter actuators has delivered autonomous cyclic actuation. The reversibility of these systems is demonstrated in a range of displacement experiments, and practical application is shown through a soft gripper that can move, pick up, and let go of objects. Our approach presents a significant step toward more autonomous, versatile soft robots driven by chemo-pneumatic actuators.

Melanin is an insoluble, amorphous polymer that forms planar sheets that aggregate naturally to create colloidal particles with several biological functions. Based on this, here, a preformed recombinant melanin (PRM) was utilized as the polymeric raw material to generate recombinant melanin nanoparticles (RMNPs). These nanoparticles were prepared using bottom-up (nanocrystallization-NC, and double emulsion-solvent evaporation-DE) and top-down (high-pressure homogenization-HP) manufacturing approaches. The particle size, Z-potential, identity, stability, morphology, and solid-state properties were evaluated. RMNP biocompatibility was determined in human embryogenic kidney (HEK293) and human epidermal keratinocyte (HEKn) cell lines. RMNPs prepared by NC reached a particle size of 245.9 ± 31.5 nm and a Z-potential of -20.2 ± 1.56 mV; 253.1 ± 30.6 nm and -39.2 ± 0.56 mV compared to that obtained by DE, as well as RMNPs of 302.2 ± 69.9 nm and -38.6 ± 2.25 mV using HP. Spherical and solid nanostructures in the bottom-up approaches were observed; however, they were an irregular shape with a wide size distribution when the HP method was applied. Infrared (IR) spectra showed no changes in the chemical structure of the melanin after the manufacturing process but did exhibit an amorphous crystal rearrangement according to calorimetric and PXRD analysis. All RMNPs presented long stability in an aqueous suspension and resistance to being sterilized by wet steam and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Finally, cytotoxicity assays showed that RMNPs are safe up to 100 µg/mL. These findings open new possibilities for obtaining melanin nanoparticles with potential applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, diagnosis, and sun protection, among others.

The short bibliography referring to the anatomy and pathology of the eyeball of turtles poses a challenge for veterinarians and conservationists given the increasing presence of this type of turtle in veterinary and wildlife centres. Although they nest on land, these animals spend a large part of their lives in the ocean, which entails a series of eye adaptations such as well-developed nictitating membranes, palpebral scales, highly sensitive corneas, or sclerotic rings to protect the eye. In our study, we performed a morphometric analysis of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) eyeball and its internal structures using advanced imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT). To the best of the authors' knowledge, there have been no studies published that describe the CT intraocular measurements of presumed normal loggerhead turtle eyes.

Raphanus sativus L. (Brassicaceae), commonly known as radish, is consumed worldwide as a vegetable. However, its benefits on mental health are unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate its anxiolytic-like effects and safety using different experimental models. An aqueous extract of R. sativus sprouts (AERSS) was pharmacologically evaluated by intraperitoneal route (i.p.) at 10, 30, and 100 mg/kg and orally (p.o.) at 500 mg/kg on behavior by using open-field and plus-maze tests. In addition, its acute toxicity (LD50) was determined by the Lorke's method. Diazepam (1 mg/kg, i.p.) and buspirone (4 mg/kg, i.p.) were the reference drugs. A significant and anxiolytic-like dosage of AERSS (30 mg/kg, i.p.) resembling the effects of reference drugs was chosen to explore the involvement of GABAA/BDZs site (flumazenil, 5 mg/kg, i.p.) and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors (WAY100635, 1 mg/kg, i.p.) as a possible mechanism of action. A 500 mg/kg, p.o. dosage of AERSS produced an anxiolytic-like response equivalent to 100 mg/kg, i.p. No acute toxicity was observed since a LD50 > 2000 mg/kg, i.p. The phytochemical analysis allowed the identification and quantification of major presence of sulforaphene (2500 µM), sulforaphane (15 µM), iberin (0.75 µM), and indol-3-carbinol (0.75 µM), as major constituents. Both the GABAA/BDZs site and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors were involved in the anxiolytic-like activity of AERSS, depending on the pharmacological parameter or the experimental assay tested. Our results demonstrate that the anxiolytic activity of R. sativus sprouts involves GABAA/BDZs site and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors supporting its health benefits in the treatment of anxiety beyond the satisfaction of basic nutritional needs.

Introducción: Actualmente los contagios por el virus del SARS-CoV-2 supera los 600 millones de casos en el mundo. Objetivo: Aislar y caracterizar el virus SARS-CoV-2 causante de la COVID-19 a inicios de la pandemia en el Perú. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó el aislamiento viral a partir de 20 muestras de hisopado nasal y faríngeo positivas a SARS-CoV-2 por RT-PCR. El aislamiento se realizó en las líneas celulares Vero ATCC CCL-81 y Vero E6, evaluando el efecto citopático, la presencia del virus por RT-PCR, inmunofluorescencia indirecta (IFI) y posterior identificación por secuenciación genómica. Posteriormente, uno de los aislamientos de mayor circulación fue seleccionado y denominado cepa prototipo (PE/B.1.1/28549/2020), realizándose 10 pasajes sucesivos en células Vero ATCC CCL-81 para evaluar la dinámica de mutaciones. Resultados: Se observaron 11 aislamientos de virus por efecto citopático confirmándose por RT-PCR e IFI, de los cuales 6 fueron secuenciados identificándose los linajes B.1, B.1.1, B.1.1.1 y B.1.205, según el comité Pango de los genomas. La cepa prototipo corresponde a la variante B.1.1 y el análisis de las secuencias de los pasajes sucesivos mostró mutaciones a nivel de la proteína de la espiga (S) del virus, sin variación en la identidad del linaje. Conclusiones: Se aislaron 4 linajes en la línea celular Vero ATCC CCL-81. Los subcultivos en la misma línea celular muestran mutaciones en la proteína de la espiga, lo que indica mayor adaptabilidad a la célula hospedera y variación de la patogenicidad in vitro, comportamiento que le permite tener más éxito de supervivencia.


Introduction: Currently, infections caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus exceed 600 million cases in the world. Objective: Isolation and characterization of the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic in Peru. Materials and methods: Twenty nasal and pharyngeal swab samples were isolated from SARS-CoV-2 using two cell lines, Vero ATCC CCL-81 and Vero E-6; virus identification was performed by RT-PCR and the onset of cytopathic effect (CPE) was evaluated by indirect immunofluorescence and subsequent identification by genomic sequencing. One of the most widely circulating isolates were selected and named the prototype strain (PE/B.1.1/28549/2020). Then 10 successive passages were performed on Vero ATCC CCL-81 cells to assess mutation dynamics. Results: We detected 11 virus isolates by cytopathic effect, and subsequently confirmed by RT-PCR and indirect immunofluorescence. Of these, six were sequenced and identified as the lineages B.1, B.1.1, B.1.1.1, and B.1.205 according to the Pango lineage nomenclature. The prototype strain corresponded to lineage B.1.1. The analysis of the strains from the successive passages showed mutations mainly at in the spike (S) protein of the virus without variation in the identity of the lineage. Conclusions: Four lineages were isolated in the Vero ATCC CCL-81 cell line. Subcultures in the same cell line show mutations in the spike protein indicating greater adaptability to the host cell and variation in pathogenicity in vitro, a behavior that allows it to have more survival success.

ABSTRACT Asthma is a common chronic airway disease in our country, although with high poor control. Some specialists of the Asociación de Alergia e Inmunología Clínica and Asociación Argentina de Medicina Respiratoria have made recommendations for management and treatment of asthma, using a RAND/UCLA modified Delphi consensus methodology, based on GRADE evidence. This document provides recommendations based on specialist opinions about different strategies to improve adherence. Besides, it provides recommendations about critical issues of mild to severe asthma treatment. It´s recommended to improve adherence, personalized control-based management plan (1 °C), mobile devices (1B) and education (1 °C). Sublingual immunotherapy must be prescribed only in patients with allergic rhinitis, mite associated, and persistent symptoms although appropriate treatment with FEV1> 70 % (1B). Use of fast action bronchodilators associated with inhaled corticosteroids prn in mild asthma (GINA stage 2) has strong recommendation (1A). Use of triple inhaled therapy (long acting anticholinergics, long acting beta 2 agonists and inhaled corticosteroids) is recommended in severe asthma (1B). Biologics has strong recommendations severe asthma: in phenotype T2 with dupilumab (1A), in phenotype allergic T2 with omalizumab (1A) and phenotype eosinophilic T2 with benralizumab or mepolizumab with distinctive characteristic (1A).


RESUMEN El asma es una enfermedad crónica de la vía aérea prevalente en nuestro país, con frecuente mal control. Algunos especialistas de la Asociación de Alergia e Inmunología Clínica y la Asociación Argentina de Medicina Respiratoria han realizado recomendaciones sobre el manejo y tratamiento del asma mediante la metodología de consenso RAND/UCLA Delphi modificada sobre la base de la evidencia científica (GRADE). Este documento provee recomendaciones basadas en la opinión de especialistas y fundamentada en evidencia científica seleccionada en cuanto a la importancia de mejorar la adherencia al tratamiento y seguimiento a través de diferentes estrategias. Así mismo, provee recomendaciones actualizadas en aspectos críticos del tratamiento del asma leve al grave. Se recomienda, para mejorar la adherencia, el uso de planes personalizados de manejo (1 °C), uso de herramientas a través de teléfonos móviles (1B) y educación (1 °C). Con respecto a la inmunoterapia sublingual solo debe ser indicada a pacientes con asociación con rinitis alérgica, asociada a ácaros y síntomas de asma a pesar del tratamiento adecuado con FEV1 > 70 % (1B). Se recomienda fuertemente en el asma leve (escalón 2 GINA) el uso de broncodilatadores de acción rápida asociados a corticoides inhalados a demanda (1A). En asma grave, se recomienda el uso de la triple terapia inhalada con anticolinérgicos de acción prolongada, beta 2 de acción prolongada y corticoides inhaladas (1B). El uso de biológicos en asma grave está fuertemente indicado en fenotipo T2 con dupilumab (1A), T2 alérgico con omalizumab (1A) y en el T2 eosinofílico con benralizumab, o mepolizumab, con sus características distintivas (1A).

Cellulose is the main polymer that gives strength to the cell wall and is located in the primary and secondary cell walls of plants. In Cactaceae, there are no studies on the composition of cellulose. The objective of this work was to analyze the crystallinity composition and anatomical distribution of cellulose in Cactaceae vascular tissue. Twenty-five species of Cactaceae were collected, dried, and milled. Cellulose was purified and analyzed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the crystallinity indexes were calculated, and statistical analyzes were performed. Stem sections were fixed, cut, and stained with safranin O/fast green, for observation with epifluorescence microscopy. The crystalline cellulose ratios had statistical differences between Echinocereus pectinatus and Coryphantha pallida. All cacti species presented a higher proportion of crystalline cellulose. The fluorescence emission of the cellulose was red in color and distributed in the primary wall of non-fibrous species; while in the fibrous species, the distribution was in the pits. The high percentages of crystalline cellulose may be related to its distribution in the non-lignified parenchyma and primary walls of tracheary elements with helical or annular thickenings of non-fibrous species, possibly offering structural rigidity and forming part of the defense system against pathogens.

Cucurbitacins are a class of secondary metabolites initially isolated from the Cucurbitaceae family. They are important for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anticancer biological actions. This review addresses pharmacokinetic parameters recently reported, including absorption, metabolism, distribution, and elimination phases of cucurbitacins. It includes recent studies of the molecular mechanisms of the biological activity of the most studied cucurbitacins and some derivatives, especially their anticancer capacity, to propose the integration of the pharmacokinetic profiles of cucurbitacins and the possibilities of their use. The main botanical genera and species of American origin that have been studied, and others whose chemo taxonomy makes them essential sources for the extraction of these metabolites, are summarized.

PURPOSE: Infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). In Latin America, data on infectious complications in this patient population are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients with newly diagnosed MM (NDMM) in seven Latin American countries between June 2019 and May 2020. Patients with active disease, on active therapy, and with a follow-up of 6 months from the time of diagnosis were included. Our primary end point was the number of infectious events that required hospitalization for ≥ 24 hours. RESULTS: Of 248 patients with NDMM, 89 (35.9%) had infectious complications (113 infectious events), the majority (67.3%) within the first 3 months from diagnosis. The most common sites of infection were respiratory (38%) and urinary tract (31%). The microbial agent was identified in 57.5% of patients with gram-negative bacteria (73.5%) as the most common pathogen. Viral infections were infrequent, and no patients with fungal infection were reported. In the multivariable analysis, diabetes mellitus (odds ratio [OR], 2.71; 95% CI, 1.23 to 6.00; P = .014), creatinine ≥ 2 mg/dL (OR, 4.87; 95% CI, 2.29 to 10.35; P < .001), no use of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole prophylaxis (OR, 6.66; 95% CI, 3.43 to 12.92; P < .001), and treatment with immunomodulatory drugs (OR, 3.02; 95% CI, 1.24 to 6.29; P = .003) were independent factors associated with bacterial infections. At 6 months, 21 patients (8.5%) had died, 47.6% related to infectious complications. CONCLUSION: Bacterial infections are a substantial cause of hospital admissions and early death in patients with NDMM. Antibiotic prophylaxis should be considered to reduce infectious complications in patients with MM.

Agricultural biodiversity includes many species that have biological variants (natives, ecotypes, races, morphotypes). Their use is restricted to local areas because they do not fulfill the commercial requirements; however, it is well documented that these species are a source of metabolites, proteins, enzymes, and genes. Rescuing and harnessing them through traditional genetic breeding is time-consuming and expensive. Inducing mutagenesis may be a short-time option for its genetic improvement. A review of outstanding research was carried out, in order to become familiar with gene breeding using gamma radiation and its relevance to obtain outstanding agronomic characteristics for underutilized species. An approach was made to the global panorama of the application of gamma radiation in different conventional crop species and in vitro cultivated species, in order to obtain secondary metabolites, as well as molecular tools used for mutation screening. The varied effects of gamma radiation are essentially the result of the individual responses and phenotypic plasticity of each organism. However, even implicit chance can be reduced with specific genetic breeding, environmental adaptation, or conservation objectives.
